FIVE TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR WINTER:

…but b efore Jack Frost settles in for the long haul, here are a few things you should do to make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold season.

1. Check your battery: Cold weather is very harsh on your battery. When those temperatures drop, starting an engine can take almost twice as much current as it would need on an average day. Have a technician run a load test to see if it’s time to replace your battery.

2. Have your cowl drains checked: Leaves may get stuck in the drains that run from the base of the windshield. This can cause water back-up and major damage to electrical components and control modules. These drains need to be cleaned annually as a preventative measure.

3. Check your anti-freeze: To prevent freezing, your engine cooling system should be a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. In addition to checking the antifreeze level, it’s smart to pressure test the cooling system to spot any possible leaks if the fluid is low.

4. Change the engine oil: Cooler temperatures can reduce the effectiveness of your engine oil, causing it to thicken and not circulate through the engine as smoothly. Your synthetic oil needs to be changed every 5000 miles or 6 months, for optimal maintenance of your car.

5. Bring your vehicle in for inspection: To make sure you’re fully prepared for winter months, it’s always a good idea to have a certified technician inspect your vehicle. A lot happens under the hood of your car, and we want to ensure you and your family are safe this winter season on the road.

Brake components for German cars have changed quite a bit over the past decade but the basic principals are still the same. Back when automobile manufacturers cared less about weight, fuel economy and performance, brake components were built to be heavy and strong. The excessive mass of the rotors allowed room for them to be machined or “cut” down, in order to smooth them out and reuse the rotors when the brake pads need to be replaced.

These days, rotors are designed to weigh less, increase performance and reduce fuel consumption. Automobile manufacturers have reduced not only the weight, but the overall thickness of the rotor. The reduction in unsprung mass is noticeable on modern cars and has achieved the goal the engineers intended. However, modern brake rotors cannot be machined as they are too thin to remove any high spots or groves that cause pulsation or squealing. This means that they now have to be replaced with each brake service.

Brake rotors and brake pads are not the only parts that are necessary to replace. It is extremely important to replace all anti-rattle clips and springs, as the old ones can lose their tension. When the brake components wear, they create dust that can cake up and even rust onto the brake components, causing them to stick, squeal or prevent the brake pads from releasing properly. That is why it is imperative that the technician cleans and files the brake pad carriers so they are not obstructed. Once the carriers are clean, they have to be properly greased. Using a high quality, moisture resistant grease will insure that the pads can slide properly. It is just as important that they can squeeze the rotor as it is that they release from the rotor, so they don’t drag and wear prematurely.

CLUNKING NOISE WHILE DRIVING? YOU MAY HAVE A BROKEN COIL SPRING!

Pothole season has arrived and that means many cars are on the road, right now, with one or more broken coil springs. Often, you will not even notice!

The coil springs allow the wheels and suspension to move vertically, while also holding up the body of the car. The length of the spring determines the car’s ride height, so if a spring brakes, the car will sit lower. The coil springs usually rust at the bottom where they attach to the suspension. They fit into a notch that tends to hold water, causing the bottom coil to rust and brake off. Since only a small portion brakes off, it’s not always obvious or noticeable.

A broken spring will affect the wheel alignment and can cause a rattling noise. It can be a safety issue because when a coil spring is broken, it is possible for it to become dislodged when going over a bump, and possibly damage other suspension parts, your tires, or even your brake lines. If you suspect any of the warning signs listed below, it is best to have the vehicle inspected, as it is dangerous to continue driving the vehicle.

CARBON BUILDUP ON INTAKE VALVES FOR AUDI, VOLKSWAGEN, BMW AND MINI

Carbon may be the building block of life, but it can wreak havoc on your engine.

Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mini engines utilize direct injection of fuel into the cylinder. Direct injection is where the fuel is sprayed at a very high pressure, directly into the cylinder through fuel injectors. The engine control module, or ECU, precisely controls all aspects of fuel injection, including the amount of fuel injected, timing, air to fuel ratio, how long the valves stay open and more. This process achieves better fuel economy and power because the combustion of fuel is more complete and the fuel burns more efficiently.

Air intake valves in all engines are exposed to air mixed with oil residue which can build up on top of the valves. Older, port style injection engines spray gasoline on the air intake valves. The fuel acts like a solvent and cleans the intake valves, promoting proper air flow. Engines with direct injection spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Because the fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber, and not on the air intake valves, there is no way for the valves to be cleaned.

While direct injection technology uses less fuel and enhances engine performance, the side effects are not so good. Over time, as carbon builds up on the air intake valves, the air flow is restricted. Symptoms of dirty intake valves would be a rough idle, loss of power, and poor fuel economy. The check engine light may also be triggered. Never fear, there is a simple solution to this issue. We use pressurized ground walnut shells to remove oil and carbon residue that has built up on the intake valves. Direct injection engines need their intake valves cleaned manually at least every 100,000 miles.

We also recommend that customers have their oil changed at least every 5,000 miles, regardless of manufacturer maintenance schedules. More frequent oil changes will help to decrease the amount of carbon that builds up over time. It is impossible to say how much carbon will build up in your engine at any certain mileage, so regular service and inspections are an important part of engine maintenance to maintain the longevity of your car.

Jerry began his career/passion for German cars while in college. He worked as a mechanic while obtaining a Bachelors Degree in business. Over the years, he became a Bosch Certified Master Technician.

The business thrived from the beginning, as the word of Jerry’s integrity and knowledge spread. Later, the business moved to Maple and Adams, as a Union 76 gas station with German car repair service (and Avis car rental).
