3 SYMPTOMS OF A BAD OR FAILING AUDI/VW TIMING CHAIN

October 31, 2019

Lori Drouillard

Since the internal combustion engine was first invented all cars have had a timing belt or chain installed in them. In the Audi and Volkswagen, the timing chain has been present from the mid 2000s. Although they may be a relatively old technology compared to other components and systems in modern cars, they serve a vital role in keeping your car running smoothly. If you believe that your timing chain may be failing then we advise you to contact us as soon as possible since a worn out timing chain can eventually lead to catastrophic engine failure.

What Is a Timing Chain?

A timing chain – which is comprised of a series of links similar to those found on a bicycle chain – is a crucial component of your Audi or VW engine. If it were not present, your high end European vehicle would be useless. The timing chain allows the camshaft, balance shaft and crankshaft to rotate in synchronization. Through years of use, a timing chain can start to stretch which will cause the engine’s timing to be inaccurate and can produce several of these signs:

  • Rattling sounds on a cold start:  Noises emitting from a timing chain are one of the most obvious signs that this vital engine component is about to fail. A failing timing chain often makes a rattling noise when it is loose inside the engine. You do not usually have much time after you hear this noise, before the chain will break. A slack chain causes the metal to hit the timing cover which will wear out the chain completely. If you hear such a noise when your engine is idling, don’t ignore it. • Your check engine light is on:  There are so many reasons that a car’s check engine light may be activated that many people unwisely ignore it. However, when a timing chain is stretched excessively, it can trigger the check engine light. When this occurs you can rely on one of our mechanics to use special software to help diagnose the problem so that we can catch a timing chain issue before it destroys your engine.
  • Engine won’t start or fails:  Of course a broken timing chain will cause your VW to either stop while it is operating or not start at all. If this occurs while you are driving then your pistons may also be damaged not to mention other collateral damage that may occur.

In short, prevention is always superior to cure especially when it comes to high end vehicles like the Audi. Don’t wait until the chain breaks. As soon as you see a check engine light or hear a rattling sound at start-up, be sure to give us a call for  Audi repair in Michigan We can help extend the life of your car and keep it running smoothly.
